Grave Markers and Plaques

  1. Grave markers must be approved by the EMCA and deposits must be paid before installation. The EMCA reserves the right to refuse installation of any grave marker that does not meet EMCA criteria.
  2. Permanent markers must be made of natural stone or bronze and must conform to the following rules and restrictions:
    • Full-size plot: three (3) markers maximum: one upright, two flush to the ground.
    • Half-size plot: two (2) markers maximum: one upright, one flush to the ground.
    • Upright markers, excluding those provided through Veterans Affairs, shall not exceed 34” wide x 18” deep x 32” high, including their bases.
    • Companion markers are allowed on adjoining plots and count as the upright marker for both plots. These shall not exceed 60” wide x 18” deep x 32” high, including their bases.
    • Upright markers must have foundations.
    • Flush markers 20” wide or smaller must be set in concrete. Larger flush markers do not require concrete foundations, but shall not exceed 28” x 16” in single plots and
      48” x 18” in companion plots.
    • In alley and street plots, only markers that are flush are permitted unless allowed by written contract at the time of sale. Alley and street plots are no longer sold.
  3. Temporary markers with the decedent’s name will be placed at new grave sites by EMCA staff and will be removed after one year of interment.
  4. Outlining a cemetery plot with rocks, sticks, shells or other materials is not allowed, and any such materials will be removed by EMCA Staff.
  5. Memorial benches are subject to EMCA Board approval and must meet the following conditions:
    • Benches are limited to one (1) per full 20’x20′ cemetery lot.
    • Grave markers that function as benches shall be in lieu of upright markers.
    • Benches may only be placed where rights to two or more immediately adjacent plots have the same owners
    • Benches shall be oriented facing east-west and placed across two adjacent plots.
    • Bench style options are limited and subject to EMCA approval.
    • Benches shall be made entirely of monument quality stone (e.g., granite).
    • Benches shall be set on full pads covering the entire ground directly under them. Such pads shall be made of concrete or monument-quality stone.
    • Meeting the above criteria does not guarantee approval for a bench.
  6. Fresh flowers left at grave sites will be removed by cemetery staff when they become unsightly.
  7. Memorabilia and decorations at grave sites are permitted up to one year after interment. Cemetery staff will remove items when they become unsightly or unsafe or are contrary to the Vision and Mission of the EMCA

  9. Small natural stones left at grave sites are allowed beyond the first year of interment.
