Hope Abbey Mausoleum

Did you Know?

Hope Abbey Mausoleum was built in 1913 and dedicated in 1914. It was designed by Ellis Lawrence, the first Dean of the UO School of Architecture who also designed the Knight Library. The cost of Hope Abbey was $40,000, big money in those days.

CEMETERY SITE WORK
by Denny Hellesvig

With a lot of financial help from Eugene Lodge No.11 and the John and Jane Youell Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, we have made great progress on our 2016 site development work.

The development of a new scatter garden, to be known as the "Memorial Garden", is well under way. There is a new path through the garden connecting to areas up the hill. On this path is constructed one of the new steles (a concrete memorial structure to hold bronze memorial plaques). There is still detail work to be completed this summer - the installation of a special donor plaque and precast concrete decorative elements. Additional clearing in the garden will soon be done along with restoration of two grave markers integrated into the design. It will then be ready for the interment of ashes and the installation of memorial plaques in the area. We are still seeking a donor who would like to sponsor a bench to be located on the garden path.

There is a second stele almost complete at the existing scatter garden. This one is very necessary because we are running out of space for memorial plaques on the overlook wall. And to reduce "scatter garden" confusing, we plan to rename this place the "Memorial Overlook".

You will also soon see new driveway grading, signage and landscape work at the cemetery entrance at 25th and University Street. Lots going on.

Sincerely,
John Bredesen
